A circuit judge denied a request from the family of the late George S. Halas Jr. for written statements from 15 people involved in the autopsy performed after the former Chicago Bears president’s death in 1979.

Judge Richard Curry rejected the request after an emotional courtroom session, including one moment when 19-year-old Stephen Halas pounded a desk and said, “I have a right to know how my father died!”

The emergency petition was filed on behalf of Halas Jr.’s first wife, Therese, and the couple’s two children, who have expressed lingering doubts about his death, which was ascribed to a massive heart attack.
