Phil Niekro, former Atlanta Braves’ pitcher, has been offered an unspecified position with the ball club, an assignment which may include some pitching.
General Manager Bobby Cox said he has discussed the idea with Niekro, 48, who was released in October, 1983, after 25 years with the Braves. He later played with the New York Yankees, Cleveland Indians and Toronto Blue Jays, who released him Aug. 31.
