The population of Latinos, the nation’s fastest-growing minority, has risen by 30% since 1980, with almost one-fourth of the increase coming from illegal aliens, the Census Bureau said. The bureau said Latinos, the second-largest minority in the United States after blacks, totaled 18.8 million in March, an increase of 4.3 million since 1980. While the Latino population was growing by 30%, the total population of the country was rising by 7.3%, with the bureau estimating that 23% of the increase in Latinos came from illegal immigrants entering the country.
