Walter Byers will officially resign as executive director of the NCAA on Oct. 1 and transfer power to his appointed successor, Dick Schultz.

Byers, 65, has been executive director of the NCAA since 1951. He announced his retirement last year and will become executive director emeritus and concentrate on development of a foundation for the NCAA and college athletics.

Schultz, 59, athletic director at Virginia, was chosen by a search committee and joined the NCAA Sept. 1.
