Bowing to public pressure, state parks Director Henry Agonia has set aside plans to chop down 80 acres of eucalyptus trees on Angel Island in San Francisco Bay. The trees were to be cut beginning Monday, but Agonia reversed the order after hearing objections by Sen. Milton Marks (D-San Francisco), other lawmakers and an environmentalist group trying to save the blue gum variety Australian-native trees. A 1979 management plan for Angel Island calls for replacing exotic vegetation with native plants.
