The NFL Management Council and the players’ union met Saturday for the first time since Sept. 2, and after the five-hour session both sides agreed to resume negotiations today in Herndon, Va.

The parties said little progress was made as they worked toward hammering out a new contract before the union’s Sept. 22 strike deadline.

“We were really into the itty-bitty steps today,” said Jack Donlan, executive director of the Management Council. “These are the type of discussions we should have months ago, not with just a short period of time before the strike deadline.”
