Long Beach : Coast Club Razing Sought

Share

Burlingame developer Rob Bellevue has filed an application to demolish the historic Pacific Coast Club and build a 16-story condominium tower in its place. The application is scheduled for review Sept. 24 by the Planning Commission, but it conforms with zoning and no special approval is required.

The 61-year-old club at 850 E. Ocean Blvd. in Long Beach will not be razed at least until November, so preservationist groups working with Bellevue will have time to look for alternatives, said a spokesman for the developer.

Earlier this year, the City Council rejected as too large a Bellevue proposal to restore the main rooms of the 61-year-old club while building 200 hotel rooms and 100 apartments behind and on top of them.

The condominium plan has about the same square footage as the partial restoration, but will intrude about 90 fewer feet onto the beach--a main council objection to the first proposal.
