Career diplomat John Taylor, the new head of the U.S. diplomatic mission in Cuba, arrived Wednesday to take up his post, a U.S. spokesman said.

Taylor, 55, was named to head the U.S. interests section at the Swiss Embassy in Havana after a nine-month break since his predecessor, Curtis Kamman, was withdrawn.

Washington broke relations with President Fidel Castro’s Communist government in 1961. The U.S. interests section was opened on Sept. 1, 1977.

Taylor’s arrival followed a summer-long anti-American media campaign here that focused on alleged CIA spying activities.
