John Montes of Anaheim defended his California super lightweight title with a second-round knockout of North Hollywood’s Walter Sims at the Spruce Goose in Long Beach on Wednesday.

The fight was stopped 1 minute, 9 seconds into the second round. Montes (35-4), who has 26 knockouts, sent Sims to the canvas three times, twice in the first round.

Sims (22-5-2, 15 knockouts) advanced to the championship bout of a $50,000 Forum lightweight tournament before being stopped by Yogi Buchanan in the fourth round in January.

Sims, then part of the stable of the Ten Goose Boxing Club of North Hollywood, left that organization after the Buchanan fight by mutual agreement.

With Dino Conti and Brett LeBlac of North Hollywood in his corner, Sims is 1-1, having knocked out Kerns Ibarra in Portland.

Montes won the state title in June with a 12-round decision over Eric Martin at the Marriott Hotel in Irvine.
