Revised Robertson Book Drops God’s ‘Order’ to Shun Politics

A recent revision of Pat Robertson’s autobiography omits a passage in which the television evangelist wrote that God told him to stay out of politics, it was reported today.

In his 1972 autobiography, “Shout It From the Housetops,” the Republican presidential hopeful wrote that in 1966 he did not campaign for his father, a U.S. senator from Virginia, because God told him not to.

“I yearned to get into the fray and start swinging, but the Lord refused to give me the liberty,” Robertson said in the 1972 paperback edition. “ ‘I have called you to my ministry,’ he spoke to my heart. ‘You cannot tie my eternal purposes to the success of any political candidate . . . not even your own father.’ ”

But the admonition was cut from a glossy, hardback revision of the book issued last October, the Virginian-Pilot and the Ledger-Star reported today.

The passage reads simply, “I yearned to get into the fray and start swinging.”
