Tennis Roundup : Gomez Struggles Past Vilas
Top-seeded Andres Gomez of Ecuador was pushed, but defeated Guillermo Vilas of Argentina, 7-6, 6-4, Thursday at Geneva, Switzerland, in the second round of the $231,000 Geneva Open.
Vilas, a former U.S. and French Open champion, had his chances to win. He served for the first set at 5-4 and led, 3-0, in the tiebreaker before Gomez rallied.
Tomas Smid of Czechoslovakia ousted fifth-seeded Eduardo Bengoechea of Argentina, 6-3, 6-2.
Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina overpowered Barbara Gerken, 6-1, 6-0, in one hour in the second round of the $300,000 Pan Pacific Women’s Open at Tokyo.
Chuck Adams of Pacific Paliysades and Richard Bergh of Huntington Beach earned wild-card spots to the Volvo/Los Angeles tennis tournament, which starts Monday at UCLA’s L.A. Tennis Center. Adams beat Mark Jacobson of Los Altos Hills, 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, while Bergh downed Steve Aniston of Irvine, 6-4, 5-7, 7-5.
