College Football : Big Eight Roundup : Wilkerson Leads Kent State to 31-17 Upset of Kansas

Eric Wilkerson set up a touchdown with a 43-yard run, threw a touchdown pass and scored on an 88-yard kickoff return at Lawrence, Kan., Saturday, leading Kent State to a 31-17 upset over the struggling Kansas Jayhawks.

Wilkerson, a 5-foot 10-inch, 180-pound junior, left the game temporarily in the third period with what officials described as a mild concussion.

He totaled 102 yards rushing in 16 carries and had 117 yards in kick returns as the Golden Flashes of the Mid-American Conference raised their record to 2-0 and handed the Jayhawks of the Big Eight their ninth consecutive defeat. Kansas is 0-2 this season.

The Jayhawks’ last victory came Oct. 4, 1986, against Southern Illinois.

Wilkerson’s backup at tailback, freshman Leroy Edmonds, ran for 102 yards in 24 carries.

Army 41, Kansas State 14--Tory Crawford scored three touchdowns and posted his 10th career 100-yard rushing game to help the Cadets to an easy victory at Manhattan, Kan.

Crawford, who opened the season with a 120-yard effort last week, rushed 29 times for 126 yards, including two 5-yard scoring runs and one of 1 yard. He also threw a touchdown pass, connecting with Mark Charette on a 38-yard play to enable Army to even its record at 1-1.

Kansas State (0-2) scored on a 9-yard pass from Gary Swim to Kent Dean in the third quarter and a 1-yard dive by Maurice Henry with 12 seconds left in the game.
