Schools and Tax Rebate

Share

As a 20-year educator, I was disturbed to read your editorial, “Schools Lose,” (Sept. 14). It would appear that our tax rebate checks will soon be in the mail but that money need not be irrevocably lost to the schools as stated in the editorial. If, indeed, the polls have indicated that most taxpayers thought that the money should have gone instead to the state’s public schools to improve the quality of education, why not do just that when checks are received? It has been reported that the dollar amounts of the checks will be minimal and here would be a great opportunity to inject much-needed revenues back into public education.

Do what I and many others will do when receiving their rebates. Endorse the check over to the school district which serves your particular community, put it in an envelope and drop it in a mailbox. Better yet, personally take it by the school district office and present it to your superintendent. Our schools need a vote of confidence about now and who knows just how much money can be returned to support instructional programs in California. Let’s give it a try! It’s an investment in the future.
