A five-mile walk Sunday ) will raise money for a local Irvine diabetes researcher and 263 other scientists who receive grants from the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.
The eight-kilometer walk is expected to raise money toward a $40,000 foundation grant, which UC Irvine pathology professor Dr. Edward R. Arquilla is using to study juvenile diabetes, a metabolic disease in which viruses kill the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas.
The walk, through the city, will begin at 9 a.m. at Western Medical Center, 1001 N. Tustin Ave., and will end at the medical center about noon. Walkers are invited to seek donation pledges for each kilometer walked, or a flat donation.
For information and sponsor forms, call the Orange County chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation at 731-4561 or 771-4152.
