Cincinnati Bengals’ General Manager Paul Brown says Coach Sam Wyche won’t lose his job over Sunday’s tactical error that cost the Bengals a 27-26 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.
With the Bengals leading, 26-20, Wyche tried to run out the clock on a fourth-down play deep in Bengal territory. However, the plan backfired after the 49ers stopped running back James Brooks with two seconds to play. The 49ers won with no time left when quarterback Joe Montana threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Jerry Rice.
