Decision Delayed on Parking Rate Rise
The Glendale Parking Commission this week postponed a decision on raising parking meter rates in municipal lots until January, after the holiday shopping season ends.
The commission voted unanimously on Monday to retain current rates for the city’s 1,755 metered parking spaces to allow a study of how those spaces are used during the holiday season.
A proposal to raise the rates from 10 to 40 cents an hour on street meters and from five to 20 cents an hour in lots has been opposed by downtown merchants, who fear it will discourage their customers and their employees who use the parking lots.
The city staff proposed the raise, which would be the first in more than 10 years, to induce more carpooling. A rate increase would also be expected to add $400,000 a year to the city’s parking fund.
The council approved the increase in August, but reconsidered after a parking commissioner and merchants asked for more time to study the issue.
