Raiders Sign 5 From Valley Area for Strike

Five former Valley-area athletes were among 55 football players signed by the Los Angeles Raiders to form a team that will play during the NFL strike.

Mike Miller and John Hynes from Cal Lutheran, Ron Foster from Cal State Northridge, Craig Ellis from Poly High and San Diego State and Luis McDonald from Canoga Park High, Valley College and New Mexico State signed contracts Wednesday.

Miller, a defensive tackle at Cal Lutheran, has been switched to the offensive line. Hynes is a tackle, Foster a safety, Ellis a running back and McDonald a wide receiver. All were cut by the Raiders during summer camp.

Other Valley-area players joining NFL teams on Wednesday included defensive back Rock Richmond, formerly of Valley College, and quarterback Erik Kramer, formerly of Pierce College and North Carolina State, who practiced with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The NFL season will continue Oct. 4, with the Raiders playing host to the Kansas City Chiefs.
