Precision Aerotech said a Navy design was to blame for the failure of the Phoenix missile’s safety and arming device. The device is produced by La Jolla, Calif.-based Precision’s Micronics International subsidiary in Brea. Failure of the device has caused the Navy to put about 370 of its updated Phoenix missiles, designated the Aim-54c, into storage. Micronics was identified as the producer of the device in a critical General Accounting Office report that was released Tuesday.
