Yorba Linda : ‘Safety Through Song’ Project Marks Milestone

Share

The one-millionth Safety Through Song Kit was awarded Monday morning at a Rose Drive Elementary School assembly in Yorba Linda.

Brooke Dale, 5, of Yorba Linda, was randomly selected to receive the kit and Yorba Linda Mayor Irwin Sried proclaimed September as “Safety Through Song Month.”

The North Orange County Board of Realtors, a trade association for local realtors, is responsible for distributing kits, including a program, coloring book and cassette tape or record, to elementary-aged children throughout Brea, Fullerton, Placentia, Yorba Linda and La Habra.

The songs teach youngsters about strangers, traffic lights, water safety and other child-safety concerns.

Janis Prall, a Newport Beach mother of a preschool-aged child, first created the songs and, with her husband Ken, designed the coloring books.

The Arizona Assn. of Realtors agreed to sponsor her idea and created a subsidiary corporation to produce and distribute the safety kits. The program has spread across 42 states.

The cost of the kits is provided by membership board dues of more than 1,800 local realtors represented by North Orange County Realtors. According to Deb Shrider, communications coordinator, last year’s safety campaign cost $5,000.
