The Coast Guard will convene a board of inquiry today into last week’s collision in dense fog off Point Conception of the Liberian bulk freighter Pac Baroness and the car carrier Atlantic Wing. The Pac Baroness went to the bottom, but the other ship made it to Long Beach, despite a severely damaged bow. Capt. David Zawadski, Coast Guard marine safety officer from San Francisco, will conduct today’s 11 a.m. hearing at 400 Oceangate in Long Beach. Meanwhile, about 200 gallons of oil from the sunken freighter spread a 100-yard-wide, 6-to-7-mile-long slick over the ocean. Officials said high winds and choppy seas over the weekend had diminished the threat that the oil once posed to a marine sanctuary at San Miguel Island.
