A 16-month-old boy died early Tuesday after falling into his family’s swimming pool while his mother was taking a shower, according to the San Diego County Coroner’s Office.

The dead infant was identified as Nicholas Wayne Horton, who lived with his parents, Kathy and Mike Horton, in the 13400 block of Cayuga Drive.

The baby apparently opened a door to the patio, wandered into the backyard and fell into the pool while his mother was inside the house taking a shower Monday night. The boy’s mother began searching for her child and found him at the bottom of the pool ahortly after 7:10 p.m., authorities said.

After she pulled the boy from the pool, paramedics were summoned and the baby was taken to Children’s Hospital, where he died at 2:33 a.m.
