GOP Influence at Pepperdine

As a freshman at Pepperdine University, I would like to say that your article clearly maligned Pepperdine (Part I, Sept. 19) as a biased patron of conservatism and the Republican Party. Though Dr. Michael F. Adams, vice president of university affairs, was the chief of staff to Howard Baker when Baker was a senator, Adams teaches his classes with complete neutrality; so does the professor of my American presidential leadership seminar in which we analyze the presidencies of John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan.

Looking at the student body as a whole, one cannot tell which party the school leans to, not that it matters anyway. If you don’t like Republicans, fine; you won’t find many, if any, at Stanford or at Harvard.

One of my dorm mates was accepted to all of the five schools to which he applied (Pepperdine, USC, Creighton, Stanford and Harvard) and came to Pepperdine. Most might call him foolish for passing up such “opportunities,” but now I am sure that I would have done the same thing too.

Maybe your article wasn’t all so bad; it will cause even more donations from even more of those evil Republicans to pour into Pepperdine’s general scholarship fund.
