Tennis Roundup : Upsets Continue as Lundgren Defeats Pate in San Francisco

Sweden’s Peter Lundgren defeated fifth-seeded David Pate, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3, as the streak of upsets continued Wednesday in the second round of the $293,400 Transamerica Open at San Francisco’s Cow Palace.

Lundgren got even for a loss last week in Los Angeles to Pate, who won that tournament by beating Sweden’s Stefan Edberg in the final.

In another San Francisco upset, eighth-seeded Jay Berger lost to Sammy Giammalva, 7-6, 6-3. After three days of play, the only seeded players remaining are No. 7 Kevin Curren and No. 1 Ivan Lendl.

Lendl disposed of Mel Purcell in less than an hour, 6-2, 6-3, in a first-round match.

Top-seeded Chris Evert routed Anne Minter of Australia, 6-0, 6-1, to move into the second round of a Virginia Slims tournament at New Orleans.

Evert, winner of 152 singles titles, took the first 11 games before Minter held serve in the 12th.

“I played really well,” Evert said. “I didn’t see any kinks in my game. I’ve had three weeks off (since the U.S. Open), and I’m eager.”

In second-round matches, Anne Smith defeated Mary Piatek, 6-3, 7-5; Kate Gompert rallied past Susan Mascarin, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, and Wendy Turnbull defeated Kathrin Keil, 7-5, 6-2.

Also moving into the third round were Marianne Werdel, who beat Gretchen Magers, 6-3, 6-2, and Robin White, who held off Patty Fendick, 7-5, 6-3.

At Palermo, Sicily, Lawson Duncan upset eighth-seeded Horacio de la Pena of Argentina, 6-2, 6-3, to move into the third round of a $100,000 clay-court tournament.
