Local News in Brief : Council Leases Land to YMCA for Parking Lot

Share

The Ventura City Council has amended a lease with the Channel Islands YMCA to give the organization use of about 20,000 square feet of city-owned land for parking at its planned aquatic center.

The YMCA, which in 1981 entered into a 50-year lease with the city, will pay an additional $15,000 annually for the parking area. It now pays the city $3,000 a year.

Several residents, including officials of the Pierpont Racquet Club, objected at Monday’s council meeting to what they called “special treatment” of the YMCA. City officials, however, said that the organization would be paying fair market value for the additional land and would be assisting the elderly and handicapped by constructing a much-needed therapy pool as part of the aquatic center.
