Pink Floyd’s “A Momentary Lapse of Reason” is an instant hit, shooting up to No. 8 on the Billboard magazine pop album chart in just three weeks. The “Dirty Dancing” sound track is nearly as hot. It’s ranked No. 7 after four weeks. Rush’s “Hold Your Fire” is rushing to the Top 10, taking only three weeks to reach No. 17. Other hot albums: Great White’s “Once Bitten” (No. 23), Metallica’s “$5.98 EP--Garage Days Re-visited” (No. 28) and Mick Jagger’s “Primitive Cool” (No. 45). Cold albums: Mr. Mister’s new “Go on . . .,” which stalled at No. 55, appears ready to go on down the chart. Whitesnake’s “Here I Go Again” is the new No. 1 single but Michael Jackson’s “Bad” (No. 8) should replace it in the next few weeks. In its second chart week, Bruce Springsteen’s single “Brilliant Disguise” climbed 10 notches to No. 30. U2’s single “Where the Streets Have No Name” (No. 24) looks certain to make the Top 10.

* R.E.M.’s “Document,” up four notches to No. 19 after just three weeks on the pop album chart, looks like it could become this Athens, Ga., rock band’s biggest hit ever. They may be poised to move from the college radio shadows into the mainstream.
