An Irvine youth was in serious condition after running into a train late at night, Irvine police said Thursday.

The 17-year-old, whom police declined to identify, suffered a compound fracture of his left shoulder and injuries to his elbow, hips and arms after running into an Amtrak train Wednesday night near Culver Avenue, south of Walnut Street, according to Sgt. Dave Freedland.

Witnesses told police that the youth had consumed alcohol before running down the middle of the track toward the train, which had been traveling at about 90 miles per hour. When the engineer saw the runner, Freedland said, he sounded his horn and slowed the train to one mile an hour.
