San Diego Roundup : Kings Face U.S. Team at Arena

The Los Angeles Kings will play Team USA at 7:05 p.m. Saturday in an exhibition hockey game at the San Diego Sports Arena.

For the Kings, it will be the last of eight exhibition games this season. For Team USA, which will represent the United States in the 1988 Olympic competition, it will conclude a nine-game tour against National Hockey League teams.

After compiling a 3-1-2 record on a recent tour of Sweden and Finland, Team USA has lost five of its first six games against NHL teams.

Team USA’s two victories were against the Detroit Red Wings, 3-1, Monday night and the St. Louis Blues, 4-2, Wednesday night. The team will play the Calgary Flames at Salt Lake City tonight.

The Kings were 3-3 entering Thursday night’s game against Vancouver at Tucson, Ariz.

The 15th Jim Shoulders Poway Rodeo will begin tonight and end Sunday at the Poway Valley Riders Assn. arena.

The rodeo starts at 7:30 tonight and Saturday and at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

It is the next-to-last of the 50 Coors Chute-Outs held this year. Competitors can qualify for the $40,000 Coors Chute-Out finals, which will be held in December at Las Vegas.

Lewis Field, the 1985 and 1986 world all-around champion and the current world bareback champion; and Budman Rowe, the 1986 world saddle-bronc champion, are among those expected to compete.

A meeting for those interested in officiating high school basketball will be held at 6 p.m. Monday at Kearny High School. Candidates must be 18 years old to be eligible.

The San Diego In-the-Water Boat Show begins Wednesday and runs through Oct. 11. The show will feature new power and sailboats at the Chula Vista Marina. The Used Boat Show will be held at the same location from Oct. 15-18.

Hobie Cat Fleet 4 will be host of a regatta for charity Saturday and Sunday.

The women’s catamaran race will be Saturday, and the single-handed open race will be Sunday. The event will coincide with the Oceanside Harbor Days.

The Hobie Apparel Longboard Surfing Championships are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at the surfing section of San Onofre Beach. Jonathan Paskowitz, the top-ranked longboard surfer in the United States, is expected to compete. First heat is at 7 a.m. each day.
