Sean Kelly clinched his third successive Nissan Classic cycling title, beating countryman and Tour de France winner Steve Roche in a 1-2 finish at Dublin, Ireland, that was greeted with wild scenes of sporting patriotism.

Thousands of Dublin residents poured into the city center to greet Kelly as he beat Roche by 43 seconds at the end of the five-day race that included many of the world’s top riders. As Kelly crossed the line, many of the crowd climbed over the protective barriers at the finish, making it nearly impossible for him to return for the victory ceremony.

American Greg LeMond, in his first stage race since March, achieved his goal of finishing. LeMond, who placed 44th, had broken his wrist and collarbone in Italy. He was badly injured in a shooting accident and underwent an appendectomy before returning to full training at the end of August.
