Wilfredo Vasquez of Puerto Rico stopped champion...
Wilfredo Vasquez of Puerto Rico stopped champion Park Chan-yong of South Korea in the 10th round to win the World Boxing Assn. bantamweight title in Seoul, South Korea.
Vasquez knocked Park down twice, in the fifth and seventh rounds, before the scheduled 15-round bout was stopped by referee Lou Morett at 43 seconds of the 10th round.
Park, making his first defense of the title he won from Japan’s Takuya Muguruma in May, had led with sharp blows in the early rounds. Relying on hit-and-run tactics, he effectively held off the slow-moving Vasquez.
But in the 10th, Vasquez launched a devastating attack, and Park could not continue.
The title was Vasquez’s first in his seven-year professional career.
Vasquez, 25, is 24-2-1. Park, 24, is 25-4-2.
