Don Merry, a sports writer for the Long Beach Press-Telegram, died of complications from cancer at Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital in Whittier. He was 48. Merry worked for The Times from 1977-1979 and reported on baseball and hockey. At the Press-Telegram, he covered the Angels, Rams and Kings and for a time was the sports columnist. Merry was born in Winnipeg, Canada. Funeral arrangements are pending.
