Orange County : College Roundup : Smoot Leads UCI in Water Polo

Dan Smoot scored three goals in the fourth quarter to lead UC Irvine to an 8-5 victory over Cal State Long Beach Tuesday in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. water polo match at Heritage Park in Irvine.

Smoot, a junior from Tustin High School, scored the goals in a three-minute span of the fourth quarter. The Anteaters (1-0, 6-4) had led, 5-2, in the fourth quarter, but Cal State Long Beach rallied to tie the score, 5-5.

Kyle Kopp had three goals to lead the 49ers (0-1, 7-5).

Irvine, ranked No. 4 in the nation, was led defensively by goalie Mark Maisel, who had 11 saves.

In women’s volleyball:

Chapman 3, Cal State Dominguez Hills 0--The Panthers won their California Collegiate Athletic Assn. opener, defeating Dominguez Hills, 15-13, 15-8, 15-12. Michelle Lazorek had 8 kills and Tammy Light had 7 to lead the Panthers (1-0, 4-7).
