Landfill Bans Trash From L.A., Burbank
Without comment, the Glendale City Council on Tuesday adopted an ordinance prohibiting Los Angeles, Burbank and about 40 other communities from dumping trash at Glendale’s only landfill, Scholl Canyon.
The council also set a limit on the amount of trash permitted weekly at the landfill.
The ordinances, coupled with other waste-reduction programs, are intended to extend the life of the landfill, which would reach capacity in 14 years under the current rate of use, according to a city report.
The ban against Los Angeles and other cities will go into effect Dec. 28. About 46% of the refuse dumped at Scholl Canyon comes from Los Angeles, mostly from private haulers who serve apartment buildings and commercial businesses, city officials said. Those haulers will be forced to use other landfills, primarily dumps in the San Fernando Valley.
Some other cities can continue to use Scholl Canyon, including Pasadena and La Canada Flintridge, but the amount of trash they dump will be limited.
