MOVIE CAPSULE : ‘REPEAT DIVE’ DELVES INTO EMOTIONS : <i> The Israeli film “Repeat Dive,” now playing at the AMC Century 14 in Century City, was reviewed by Patrick Goldstein for The Times on Nov. 20, 1985. Below is a excerpt from that review.</i>
Originally released in 1982, “Repeat Dive” is the work of Shimon Dotan, a first-time director with a keen eye for capturing the flickering spark of repressed emotions.
The story here, concerning a crack Israeli frogman unit embarking on a dangerous commando mission, inspires Dotan to conjure up the spirit of (director) Howard Hawks, even if Dotan doesn’t have the old master’s narrative crackle.
What the Israeli director does have is an unerring knack for visualizing how the shock of combat has unnerved these young but callow warriors. Of all the good performances by the actors, Liron Nigrad’s--as the young widow of a fallen frogman--is the most compelling, giving us a widow baffled by her own sorrow.
