Tear Gas Flushes Suspected Sniper
A man suspected of shooting at people on the street Saturday was arrested after a five-hour standoff that ended when a SWAT team used tear gas to flush him from a house south of downtown Los Angeles, sheriff’s deputies said.
The suspect, Samuel Bernette Randall, 22, of Los Angeles, walked out of the house at 2104 Oris St. shortly after 5 p.m., surrendering unarmed, a Sheriff’s Department spokesman said.
Deputies went to the house about noon, when people in the neighborhood reported shots were fired at passing bicyclists and moped riders.
Five men and a woman who had been inside the house with the gunman walked out unharmed, the spokesman said. Two weapons were recovered, a .22-caliber rifle and a shotgun, he said.
The SWAT team resorted to tear gas after sheriff’s negotiators failed to persuade the suspect to surrender, the spokesman said.
Randall was charged with assault with a deadly weapon. His bail was set at $15,000.
