The Continental Basketball Assn. fined the Mississippi Jets $50,000 for rules violations uncovered in a probe of game-throwing, the owner of a league franchise announced in Charleston, Va.
Action on the game-throwing allegations was put off, however, pending the Jets’ response to a CBA letter asking for more information, said Jack Catalano, owner of the Charleston Gunners and host of the league’s fall meetings.
Ted Stepien, owner of the Biloxi-based team, has until Thursday evening to respond to the game-throwing charges because the league wants the issue behind it by the time the CBA season opens next month, Catalano said.
The Jets are accused of trying to throw three games last season to avoid a second-place finish in its division, which required it to find alternate sites for its home playoff games. The Jets won two of those games.
