Manhattan Beach : Campaign Limits Rejected

Share

The City Council this week rejected Mayor Bob Holmes’ proposal to restrict campaign spending and contributions.

Holmes proposed an ordinance that would have limited contributions to $249 from a single source, but none of the four council members supported it.

“I don’t think it’s a question of abuses,” Holmes said. “I think it’s . . . trying to keep the election sort of a small town thing. . . . I think it would have made a nice statement in the community.”

Mayor Pro Tem Larry Dougharty has said that limits are not necessary in Manhattan Beach and pointed out that the biggest spenders in the last election were defeated.

The four-year terms of Holmes and Council members Jan Dennis and Gil Archuletta end in March, but they have said that they are unsure if they will seek new term terms.
