South Bay : Accident Cuts Power

Share

A 58-year-old motorist veered off Western Avenue early Wednesday, knocking down a main electrical power line at Caddington Drive that, in turn, pulled another line down, filling the street with tangled wires.

Power was cut off to 1,563 customers--including Ft. MacArthur and San Pedro Peninsula Hospital--in Rancho Palos Verdes, Lomita and San Pedro. Power was restored within 45 minutes to all but 75 customers in a residential area near the crash site, according to Southern California Edison Co. They were to have full power by Wednesday evening.

The driver, Andrew Zankich of Rancho Palos Verdes, was not injured, though his 1969 Chevrolet sustained major damage, according to a sheriff’s spokesman.

The 4:20 a.m. accident closed Western between Capitol Avenue and Toscanini Drive for almost five hours and Edison crews spent Wednesday afternoon installing new 50-foot poles, power lines and other equipment.
