Cudahy : Swim Pool Financing Assured

Construction is expected to start in February on this city’s first swimming pool. After months of unsuccessful attempts to raise money for a pool, city officials have been informed that two bills recently signed by Gov. Deukmejian contain money for the Cudahy project.

A Senate bill sponsored by Sen. Dan McCorquodale (D-Santa Clara) included $250,000, and an Assembly bill by Assemblyman Willie Brown (D-San Francisco) carried $50,000, City Manager Gerald Caton said. Caton said the city will add $120,000 to the swimming pool fund from its federal Community Development Block Grant money, and hopes to build the pool for $420,000.

The pool will be built at Lugo Park, a two-acre city-owned site near the western edge of the 1.1-square-mile community of 20,000. An Olympic-size outdoor pool with a smaller warm-up pool will be constructed, Caton said. The city had hoped to raise enough money to build an indoor swim complex but was unable to do so.

In a related action, the City Council voted to name the proposed pool the Sen. Bill Greene Aquatic Center in honor of the Los Angeles Democrat whose district includes Cudahy, Caton said.

“Sen. Greene was wonderful. He worked so hard to get us the funds,” Caton said.
