‘AIDS Bills Don’t Fare Well’

Share

Deukmejian’s veto of the AIDS prevention program for junior and senior high school students demonstrates his appalling insensitivity to the issue of AIDS and to education in general. His failure to approve the Hart Bill is a clear example of his unwillingness to confront the AIDS crisis.

Until a cure is found for AIDS, the best method of prevention is through education. It is critical that junior and senior high school students be informed of the facts to protect them from becoming victims of AIDS through ignorance.

Although the governor publicly states that he “understands and supports the need for (AIDS) education,” he has not taken the necessary steps to implement educational programs for students. This is not surprising, given his continual failure to support legislation providing more funding for public schools.

Deukmejian’s failure to support legislation providing for AIDS education and for additional funding for schools will lead to a dangerous ignorance in our state.
