Local News in Brief : Earthquake Aid Hot Line
Reacting to housing problems of victims of the recent earthquake, the Legal Aid Society of Los Angeles has opened telephone message lines to give taped advice to renters who fear that they may be displaced from their apartments.
The messages, recorded in English and Spanish, will give information on federal disaster assistance and locations of Red Cross shelters, said Barbara Blanco, coordinator of the phone lines. The messages, which also explain how disaster aid can affect immigration status, will be updated periodically.
Renters also will be told how to get their buildings inspected, what to do if a building appears to be unsafe and how to proceed if landlords deny them access to their apartments.
The English line, at (213) 252-3900, began service on Tuesday. The Spanish line, at (213) 252-3901, begins service today at 4 p.m.
