Magnolia Coach Hangartner Is Stable After Heart Attack

John Hangartner, the Magnolia High School football coach, who suffered a heart attack Tuesday in the coronary care unit of Humana Hospital in Anaheim, was transferred to Anaheim Memorial Hospital Wednesday.

The night supervisor in Memorial’s coronary care unit said Hangartner was in stable condition and resting comfortably.

Hangartner had been admitted to Humana Saturday after suffering angina attacks. Hangartner’s son, John Jr., said his father was transferred to Memorial because the hospital had the facilities to perform an angiogram, X-ray pictures of blood vessels.

“Now it’s all waiting,” he said. “No surgery or anything else is going to be done.”

Dave Gunn, an assistant coach at Magnolia, said he will direct the offense and Ted Canfield will supervise the defense in Hangartner’s absence.

“We’re going to run the program as we regularly would,” Gunn said.

Magnolia (0-5) opens Orange League play tonight against Brea-Olinda at Western High.

Hangartner, 50, posted a 122-63-6 record in 19 seasons at Kennedy High School. He went to Magnolia in 1985 and had a 7-3 record his first year and was 2-7-1 in 1986.
