UNESCO’s 50-member executive board delayed a final secret vote today on its nominee to be the agency’s next director general, and delegates said current leader Amadou Mahtar M’Bow of Senegal may be asked by his African supporters to resign to pave the way for a consensus candidate.

The delegates put off their fifth and final vote until 6 p.m. Saturday. Delegates said they will select a nominee at that time, either by consensus or election.
