Orange County Roundup : Cyclists to Compete in Santa Ana Race

Nearly 600 cyclists are expected to compete Sunday in the Golden City Grand Prix in Santa Ana for the Orange County championship and $5,000 in cash prizes.

There will be eight divisions, including ones for seniors and women. The races will be held on the city streets around the civic center starting at 7:30 a.m. and concluding around 4:30 p.m.

Skip Cutting, the current world and U.S. national veteran road-racing champion, is expected to compete, as is Lars Jensen, the national champion from Denmark.

There will be no admission charge, and bleacher seats will be provided along the race course.

Pat Riley, coach of the world champion Los Angeles Lakers, will give a talk tonight at Rancho Santiago College in Santa Ana.

Riley’s talk, which starts at 7:30 p.m. in the gym, is titled “Staying One Step Ahead of the Posse.”

Admission is $10 in advance and $15 at the door. The program is jointly sponsored by Rancho Santiago and Fullerton and Irvine Valley colleges.

The first senior racquetball tournament is scheduled for Saturday at Racquetball World in Fountain Valley.

There will be men’s and women’s divisions for players ages 55-59 and 60 and over in doubles and singles.

The entry fee is $15 for singles or doubles and $20 for both. Registration begins at 8 a.m., and those who enter also will receive a T-shirt. Applications are available at Racquetball World in Fountain Valley, Buena Park, Santa Ana and Canoga Park.

Carriage horses and drivers will compete in the 1987 Coto Driving tournament at Coto De Caza Saturday and Sunday.

The equestrian event will be composed of three phases. The first will be a dressage competition, which tests the obedience of the horse during a compulsory routine. The second is a marathon over an 8- to 10-mile course of varying terrain, and the third is an obstacle course.

The Golden West College water polo team, ranked second in the state, will play top-ranked Long Beach tonight at 7 in a South Coast Conference match at Long Beach’s Belmont Plaza. The game was originally scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
