Local News in Brief : Evacuation in Acid Spill
Streets in a six-block area of South El Monte were closed and residents evacuated while authorities cleaned up a nitric acid spill at a chemical plant.
The evacuation was ordered shortly after 8:30 p.m. Thursday, and residents were allowed to return to their homes about two hours later, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Kathryn Nielsen said.
It wasn’t known how many people were affected or how much nitric acid was involved in the leak at Kerns Chemical Co., she said. Nitric acid can irritate the eyes, mucous membranes and skin.
