Local News in Brief : Multiple Rapist Gets 60 Years, Ordered to Pay $10,000 to Fund
With nine of his 12 female victims in the courtroom, a 26-year-old admitted rapist and burglar was sentenced to 60 years in prison Monday.
Paul Avery Moran, who told a probation officer he fantasized as early as age 13 about raping women, had pleaded guilty to nine counts of rape, one count of attempted rape and two counts of residential burglary last month. Twenty-two remaining charges were dropped in a plea bargain last month.
“He acted like a predatory animal, stalking his victims,” said Van Nuys Superior Court Judge Richard A. Adler, who issued the sentence according to the terms of the plea bargain.
As part of his sentence, Moran, a former fire-extinguisher repairman, was ordered to pay $10,000 to the state’s victim-compensation fund. He will be eligible for parole in 30 years.
One of the victims testified Monday that Moran was so intent on attacking her that he did so in the presence of her 18-month-old son. She fought him off successfully but suffered a cracked rib when he threw her against a kitchen counter.
Another victim said she was attacked by Moran as she came out of the shower.
In an interview with a probation officer, Moran apologized for the attacks, saying he was ashamed and needed psychological counseling. He suggested that his problems may stem from having been molested himself at the age of 6 or 7.
The victims involved in the case were 15 to 28 years old. The attacks began in May, 1984, and continued until his arrest Jan. 17, 1985.
