Opposing Answer
Why is it in recent years that whenever the President makes a nationally televised speech on any subject, whether in a partisan political vein or not, the TV networks think they must immediately jump on the air with an “answer” from the opposing party? This is particularly odd now that the Federal Communication Commission’s “equal time rule” has been rescinded.
A recent example is the President’s speech on the confirmation process for Judge Robert Bork for the Supreme Court vacancy. A much better example is the annual State of the Union message delivered each January by the President.
No matter who the President is or what party he belongs to, Americans owe respect to the office of the presidency, and this immediate second-guessing of his official proclamations serves only to divide the country at a time when we should be truly the United States.
