Responding to concern from children and parents about the departure of Lomita’s popular sports coordinator, the City Council voted Monday to investigate whether she would return to work in a higher-paying position.

Cynthia L. Blount resigned from her coaching and administrative duties at Lomita Park early this month to accept a full-time driving job with UPS at $11.36 an hour, about $1,970 a month. Supporters described Blount, who has worked with the city for 11 years, as the heart of Lomita’s athletic program.

The council agreed to send two council members--Charles Belba and Pete Rossick--to talk with Blount before their next meeting on Nov. 2, when the council will discuss creating the position of assistant recreation supervisor. The job, has a salary range of $1,549 to 1,929 a month, the same as the office manager of parks and recreation.
