Consumption of alcohol on city beaches during late-night and early-morning hours would be restricted under a plan endorsed Wednesday by a San Diego City Council committee. The five-member Public Services and Safety Committee voted 3-0 in favor of the proposal, which would prohibit drinking alcohol on city beaches between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., committee consultant Betsy McCullough said.
The proposal is expected to be voted on by the entire City Council in the next six to eight weeks, according to McCullough.
Committee members Abbe Wolfsheimer, Gloria McColl, and Celia Ballesteros voted in favor of the plan, while the two other members, Judy McCarty and Bill Cleator, were not at Wednesday’s meeting, she said.
The proposed ban is the result of beach residents’ complaints and a police task-force study that determined rowdiness and other problems can be alleviated by restricting alcohol on city beaches during late-night hours.
“Proponents of this ban point out San Diego is one of the few cities along the California coast that still allows alcohol consumption on its beaches at all times,” McCullough said.
The ban would encompass all of the beaches between Torrey Pines and Point Loma, including Pacific Beach, Mission Beach and Ocean Beach. Currently, only glass containers are prohibited on these beaches.
