Share

The Los Angeles Police Department and merchants of the Silver Lake area Wednesday evening unveiled a new police outpost to enable officers to spend more time in the area.

The Silver Lake Community Center, which sprang from discussions between Los Angeles City Councilman Michael Woo and the Silver Lake Merchants Assn., will be used by police for writing reports and holding Neighborhood Watch meetings.

At an opening ceremony at the center at 1822 Hyperion Ave., Police Chief Daryl F. Gates said its primary purpose is to spare officers the time required to drive to the Northeast Division station.

In the cooperative effort, considered a model for other parts of the city, the merchants have agreed to pay the rent, the city has provided signs and an air conditioner and the state will help pay for utilities.
