SPORTS SCOPE : 170 Collegiate Netters Begin All-American Play Friday

The Volvo All-American Tennis Championships will begin Friday with five days of qualifying for about 170 college players for just a few spots at UCLA’s Los Angeles Tennis Center and Sunset Canyon courts. Matches will be played from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day. Admission is free. UCLA Coach Glenn Bassett is in charge of the qualifying rounds. The title draw of 32 singles players and 16 doubles teams will begin Oct. 29 and end Nov. 1. General admission for the main draw is $3 each day, $8 for a box seat or $32 for four days in a box. Among those already named to the title draw in singles are Andrew Sznaidjer of Pepperdine, Mark Kaplan of UC Irvine, Greg Failla of Cal State Long Beach and Tim Trigueiro of Southern Methodist, a transfer from UCLA.

Doubles teams already named to the main draw include UCLA’s Patrick Galbraith-Brian Garrow and Buff Farrow-Robert Jan Bierens, Pepperdine’s Sznaidjer-Robbie Weiss and USC’s Eric Amend-Scott Melville.

The fourth-ranked UCLA women’s volleyball team, 17-4 overall and 7-1 in the Pacific 10 Conference as the week began, will play host to No. 13 Oregon at 7 p.m. Friday and to Oregon State at 7 p.m. Saturday before entertaining No. 16 UC Santa Barbara in a non-conference match at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Pauley Pavilion.

In road matches last week, the Bruins defeated UCSB in four games, Washington State in five and Washington in three. UCLA sophomore middle blocker Daiva Tomkus had a career-high 30 kills against Washington State and stretched her streak of serving aces at least once a match to 19 matches.

Bruin senior outside hitter Lori Zeno leads the team overall with an average of 4.01 kills a game and a .373 hitting percentage.

The No. 15 Pepperdine women’s volleyball team, 10-6 overall and 5-0 in the West Coast Athletic Conference at the start of the week, will play a non-conference match at UC Santa Barbara at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Wave senior outside hitter Julie Evans, a team leader, is expected to miss Saturday’s match because of a broken bone in her left hand but could return to action next weekend.

Last week the Waves won two conference matches at home, defeating Santa Clara in four games and San Francisco in three.

Loyola-Marymount, idle till Oct. 30, ran its conference record to 3-2 and is 9-13 overall after defeating Santa Clara in four games, including one shutout, and USF in five.

In the two home matches, senior outside hitter Tiffany Miller led the Lions with 42 kills and also had 11 digs against USF.

The UCLA men’s soccer team (8-4-1) will meet fourth-ranked San Francisco (10-3-2) tonight at Logan High School in Union City. The Bruins will play host to Santa Clara, 8-4-1 overall as the week began, at 2 p.m. Sunday at North Athletic Field on campus. At home last week the Bruins tied San Diego, 1-1, and defeated UC Santa Barbara, 2-0. Shaun Del Grande scored the Bruins’ only goal against San Diego, and Bill Thompson got both goals against the Gauchos. In the Santa Barbara match, Drew Leonard, making his first start at goalkeeper in a month, recorded UCLA’s first shutout since Sept. 12.

The Pepperdine water polo team, 11-10 overall and 4-2 and in second place in the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn., will play host to league-leading and fourth-ranked UC Irvine (10-4 and 5-0) at 1 p.m. Sunday at Raleigh Runnels Pool. The Waves will entertain Iona at 4 p.m. Saturday at Malibu.

Last week the Waves lost to No. 3 UCLA, 8-5, and to UC San Diego, 11-10, in overtime. Against the Bruins, senior Robbie Boyer led the Waves with two goals, and in the UC San Diego match Pepperdine was paced by Aaron Chasen with four goals and Rafael Gandarillas with three.

In cross country, the UCLA women’s and men’s teams will compete Saturday in the Bronco Invitational at Cal Poly Pomona.

Last week the No. 6 Bruin women won the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Invitational with 74 points, to 84 for No. 13 UC Irvine, 92 for Cal Poly SLO (the top-ranked team in Division II) and 182 for No. 8 Stanford.

Freshman Melissa Sutton led the Bruins, finishing eighth in 17:01. Other top UCLA performers: senior Annie Seawright, 13th in 17:14; sophomore Laurie Chapman, 14th in 17:15, and sophomore Laura Chapel, 19th in 17:25.

The UCLA men’s and women’s swim teams will open their seasons as hosts to Mission Viejo in a dual meet that starts at 9 a.m. Saturday at the UCLA men’s gymnasium pool.
